Politics
In August, 1990, Tatarstan adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. Transformation of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to the Republic of Tatarstan was not a mere change of names - it became an act of self-determination, underlying all subsequent decisions. All politics, social and economic processes, relations with the federal center, foreign relations have been formed on the bases of the ideas contained in the Declaration and subsequently embodied in the Tatarstan Constitution, Treaty on Delimitation of Jurisdictional Subjects and Powers between Bodies of Public Authority of the Russian Federation and Bodies of Public Authority of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the republican legislation.
Tatarstan has developed the model of polyethnic, polyconfessional society optimal for a multinational state. All forms of extremism have been practically removed from the political arena to secure public order.
Tatarstan has over three hundred registered and functioning public organizations of different directions, with several tens of thousands members. For the period since the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty Tatarstan has become a politically developed region with lasting democratic traditions and multi-party system; strong legal base; politically active population and responsible authorities not afraid of a constructive dialogue with society.
